Bonfire Bavardages

Dear Reader,

A literary magazine can represent multitudes. Each person who interacts with it has a different experience or takeaway. Bringing our diverse population together, each edition of Mille Fontaines becomes a time capsule of particular semesters here at ACM-IAU. People from various backgrounds are given the opportunity to gather and share their creations. Being drawn from all over the world, we come together in this foreign environment. Having left behind our community, we forge new connections. Expressing ourselves freely, we make this place special.

As Head Editor for the last four editions of Mille Fontaines, it has been my absolute pleasure and highest honor to steward this artistic space. Each semester has had its own distinctive flair, with the sole consistency being a creative spirit shared by each generation of ACM and IAU students.

To reflect this integral connection, inspiration for our theme was taken from the South African tradition of braai. Though simply meaning barbecue or grill in Afrikaans, the cultural significance of braai surpasses the cooking of meat over fire. The tradition constructs a space which brings people together, no matter their background, in order to share their unique experience of humanity. Intimacy abounds, stories are told, and lifelong friendships are made.

Our hope for this rendition of Mille Fontaines is to showcase a similar warmth that occurs within our campus. As you bask in the glow of our Bonfire Bavardages, we hope you are inspired to share your own story by the fire.

Bien à vous tous,

Charles P. DeLeon-Franzen
